Kerala to launch disease calendar to track seasonal outbreaks, boost public health response

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government will prepare a calendar to map seasonal and regional patterns of disease outbreaks across the state. The move aims to give the public health system an added edge in predicting and responding to future outbreaks.

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan announced the plan at a press conference on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. He pointed out how outbreak patterns already show clear trends. Nipah virus cases, for instance, have been repeatedly reported in the Perambra region of Kozhikode between May and September.

The Minister also noted regional variations in other infections. Curiously, some districts have reported no Shigella cases so far, with Palakkad being a notable example.

Officials say the calendar will help health workers anticipate high-risk periods and regions, streamline surveillance, and deploy resources faster. The government hopes the data-driven approach will move Kerala’s response from reactive to predictive as climate and travel patterns shift disease dynamics.
