India’s new private physics institute bets on ‘less is more’

New Delhi: India has a new home for theoretical physics — and it is intentionally small.

The Lodha Theoretical Physics Institute (LTPI), launched with private funding, is positioning itself as a focused alternative to India’s large state-run research centres.

Founding director Jainendra K. Jain says the idea is not to compete with giants like TIFR, IISc, ICTS or HRI, but to do one thing differently: stay narrow and nimble.“These other institutes are fantastic. We can all be very proud of them,” Jain said. “What will set LTPI apart is focus and freedom.”

Where TIFR spans biology, chemistry and climate science, LTPI will focus only on theoretical physics. It will remain small by design — with about 10 to 12 full-time faculty, around 40 postdoctoral researchers, and a rotating group of visiting scientists.

Because it is funded entirely by private money, Jain said, the institute will be spared much of the bureaucracy that comes with state-run institutions.

The pitch is simple: less scale, more focus. LTPI hopes that a lean structure and freedom from administrative burden will help it attract top talent and produce high-impact research in theoretical physics.
