Four rare Barbary macaque babies born at Staffordshire wildlife park

Staffordshire: Four rare Barbary macaque babies have been born in the treetops of Trentham Monkey Forest, giving a boost to conservation efforts for the endangered species.

The infants arrived at the Staffordshire woodland sanctuary, which works to increase numbers of threatened primates. Staff say the four new arrivals have already been spotted by visitors exploring the park.

Barbary macaques are listed as endangered, with only about 8,000 thought to remain in the wild. Native to North Africa, the species has seen populations decline due to habitat loss and illegal trade.

Trentham Monkey Forest houses a free-roaming troop of Barbary macaques in 60 acres of woodland, allowing them to exhibit natural behaviors while contributing to European breeding programs.
