India’s merchandise exports jump 14% in April despite West Asia trade headwinds

New Delhi: India’s merchandise exports rose nearly 14% year-on-year in April to $43.6 billion, defying significant trade disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis, according to official data released Friday.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal attributed the performance to a combination of higher global prices and concerted efforts by Indian exporters to diversify markets. The broader trade picture also improved. The overall trade deficit, counting both merchandise and services, fell 30% in April to $7.8 billion.

The April figures offer an early signal for FY2026-27, suggesting exporters are adjusting supply chains and buyer networks as geopolitical tensions weigh on traditional trade routes.
