Atlanta awaits: Two pandas to travel 8,000 miles from China for ‘blind date of a lifetime’

Atlanta: The Hawks, the Falcons, and soon, two giant pandas. Atlanta is preparing to welcome new bamboo-eating residents as Ping Ping and Fu Shuang get ready for a nearly 8,000-mile move from China to their new home.

The pair has never met, but zookeepers are calling it “the blind date of a lifetime.” Both currently live in Chengdu, a city of over 20 million in southwestern China, before their transfer to another panda base farther south ahead of the trip to America.

Staff describe Ping Ping as an avid bamboo eater. Fu Shuang, whose name means “double happiness,” is playful but a bit timid. She also enjoys snacking on apples and resting her chin on her paw.

The pandas’ arrival will mark Atlanta’s latest chapter in giant panda conservation and public exhibition. Details on their debut date at the zoo have not yet been released.

The move comes as U.S.-China panda exchanges continue to draw international attention, with the animals serving as both conservation ambassadors and symbols of cultural diplomacy.
