‘India wakes up here’: 5 Northeast sunrise points before the rest of the country opens its eyes
Pre-monsoon window closes by mid-June — Dong Valley sees first light as early as 4 am
Northeast India | 2026While summer crowds chase Himachal and Uttarakhand, India’s northeast quietly claims a different record: the country’s earliest sunrise. Because India stretches almost 30 degrees of longitude, first light hits the eastern hills, ridges and river valleys nearly two hours before it reaches Mumbai or Delhi. The monsoon shuts this window by end of June. Until then, skies stay clear and dawns burn brightest. Here are five places to watch India wake up.
1. Dong Valley, Arunachal Pradesh – First light in India
Tucked in Anjaw district near the India-China-Myanmar tripoint, Dong is the first inhabited spot in India to catch the sun. From Walong, it’s an 8-10 km trek starting at 3 am through pine forests in total darkness. In peak summer, sunrise hits by 4 am. At the top: layered mountains, the Lohit River glinting far below, and a sky that opens before any other point in the country. Inner Line Permit required.
2. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh – Dawn with monk chants

“Land of the dawn-lit mountains” isn’t just a name here. At the Tawang viewpoint, monks start morning chants before sunrise while prayer flags snap in the cold wind. At 3,048 m, clear mornings reveal Kangto and Gorichen’s snow peaks. Best months: March to June, when Sela Pass stays open. Nearest airport: Guwahati, 12 hours by road.
3. Japfu Peak, Nagaland – Half a state under one sky
South of Kohima, Japfu Peak gives one of the widest sunrise views in the northeast. From the summit you can see most of Nagaland, parts of Arunachal, and even Dibrugarh in Assam on clear days. Trek starts 2 am from Kigwema village, 16 km from Kohima. Rhododendron forests give way to a bare ridge. Sunrise around 5 am. Inner Line Permit required.
4. Nongjrong, Meghalaya – Sunrise from above the clouds
49 km from Shillong, this Khasi village flips the view. You don’t watch the sun rise over the horizon — you watch it light up a valley still sunk in darkness while the sky above turns gold. Leave Shillong by 3 am. March to May is spectacular, but October to February has the clearest skies.
5. Laitlum Canyon, Meghalaya – ‘End of the hills’ at dawn
35 km from Shillong, Laitlum means “end of the hills” in Khasi. The canyon drops sharply into a mist-filled bowl. At dawn, light floods the valley floor while the ridges above stay in shadow. Arrive before 5:30 am for the full effect.
