Adyar Cancer Institute makes robotic surgery accessible with subsidised care model

Chennai: Adyar Cancer Institute has expanded access to robotic-assisted cancer surgery through institutional support, donor funding and a subsidised care model, reducing the cost barrier for patients.

Nearly 60% of the robotic-assisted cancer surgeries performed at the institute have been carried out under free and subsidised treatment programmes, the hospital said. The initiative aims to make advanced surgical care available to patients who cannot afford the high cost of robotic procedures.

The procedures cover a range of cancers including thoracic, head and neck, colorectal, urological and gynaecological cancers. All surgeries are performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, which allows for minimally invasive operations with greater precision and faster recovery.

Robotic-assisted surgery has traditionally been limited by high costs and infrastructure requirements. The institute’s model combines donor support with internal resources to bridge that gap for eligible patients.

Doctors say the approach has helped more patients opt for robotic surgery without the financial burden, improving treatment outcomes across multiple cancer types.
