Viral monkey Punch unharmed after enclosure breach; Two taken into custody

Ichikawa, Japan: Two people were arrested after a person broke into the enclosure of Punch, a viral macaque, at a zoo outside Tokyo, officials said Sunday.

Ichikawa City Zoo reported an “intruder” entered the monkey enclosure earlier that day. Police apprehended two individuals in connection with the incident.

Zoo staff conducted immediate safety checks on Punch and the other macaques. Officials confirmed the animals were unharmed and that “no abnormalities” were observed. The zoo said it will implement new “countermeasures” starting Tuesday.

Plans include expanding the viewing restriction area, installing “intrusion prevention nets,” and maintaining constant patrols around the enclosure. Police have not released the identities of those arrested or potential charges. The investigation is ongoing.
