Hyderabad man’s free coaching turns watchmen’s children into engineers

Miyapur, Telangana: A former corporate employee who quit his job in 2003 is seeing the long-term payoff of his decision — hundreds of children of security guards and domestic workers are now graduating as engineers, many earning up to Rs 20 lakh a year.

The free coaching programme, run from Miyapur, has guided more than 1,500 students from low-income families through school, diploma courses, and engineering degrees at zero cost to their families. The initiative targets children of watchmen, house help, and other daily-wage workers who often lack access to quality tutoring.

Students receive after-school classes, study materials, and mentorship through Class 12 and into technical colleges. “We started with just a handful of kids under a tin shed,” the founder said. “The goal was simple: no child should miss out on education because their parents can’t afford tuition.” Two decades later, alumni of the programme are working at major tech and engineering firms across India.

Several now earn starting packages of Rs 15-20 lakh per annum. Parents say the programme changed their families’ futures. “I guard an apartment at night. I never thought my son would be an engineer,” said one watchman whose daughter recently joined an IT company in Hyderabad.

The coaching centre runs entirely on volunteer teachers and private donations. Classes continue six days a week, with special batches for board exams and entrance tests.
