Vengathur lake revived through community effort; Turns into vital groundwater source

The long-cherished dream of Manavalan Nagar residents to see Vengathur lake restored has come true, as sustained community action has brought the once-dry water body back to life. Located close to the Cooum river, the lake is now serving as a rich source of groundwater for the area.

The push to restore the lake began in 2019, when it dried up completely and the groundwater table in the neighborhood fell rapidly. Concerned residents of Manavalan Nagar Residents Welfare Association joined hands with Care Earth Trust, a Chennai-based biodiversity organisation, to begin revival work.

After years of concerted efforts, Vengathur lake, which spreads over nearly 300 acres, now holds water even during peak summer days. The restored lake has improved groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas and renewed hope for sustainable water security among local residents.

What started as a seed of awareness during a severe dry spell has grown into a successful example of community-led water conservation, with residents and volunteers working together to safeguard a vital natural resource.
