Simple scoring system can help save premature babies, finds SMS Medical College study
Jaipur: A study by doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College has found that a simple scoring system can help quickly identify serious health risks in premature and low-weight newborns and improve their chances of survival.
The research, conducted on 181 premature babies at JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur, highlighted the usefulness of the CRIB-II (Clinical Risk Index for Babies-II) score to assess a newborn’s condition soon after admission.
CRIB-II evaluates key clinical parameters in the first hours of life to determine the level of risk. Doctors said using the score helps medical teams prioritize intensive care, monitor vulnerable infants more closely, and make timely treatment decisions.
According to the study, early risk assessment with CRIB-II can be particularly valuable in neonatal intensive care units where resources need to be directed to the babies who need them most.
The findings suggest that adopting this quick, standardized tool could strengthen neonatal care and reduce mortality among premature and low-birth-weight infants in hospital settings.
