New Delhi: India’s flagship rooftop solar scheme is picking up pace fast. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday that daily installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana have more than tripled in the last nine months.
“The pace of installations has increased about 3.2 times in just nine months from 5,000 installations per day in October 2025 to over 16,328 per day in July 2026,” Joshi said while speaking at the seventh CII International Energy Conference.
The scheme has also crossed a major milestone, with more than 50 lakh beneficiaries now covered under it.
Launched to provide free electricity through rooftop solar to households, PM Surya Ghar aims to cut power bills while pushing clean energy adoption at the household level. The surge in daily installations signals faster ground-level rollout across states.
In a related development, Thenhi village in Dhamtari became the first ‘PM Surya Ghar’ Model Village in the district. A 142-kilowatt community solar plant was installed there on Wednesday under the scheme, marking the start of village-level adoption.
Officials say the model village approach is being pushed to showcase how communities can shift to solar collectively and reduce dependence on the grid.
With installations now averaging over 16,000 a day, the ministry expects the numbers to climb further as awareness and subsidy disbursals pick up ahead of the winter season.
