Peacocks Find a Home in Kuppam’s Granite Quarries

Kuppam: In Kuppam, where Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu meet, the sound of peacocks is now competing with granite machinery at dawn.

The quarries of Gudupalle, Ramakuppam, Shantipuram and surrounding scrub forests have become an unlikely sanctuary. Flocks of peacocks have claimed the rocky hills, turning blasted terrain into habitat for India’s National Bird.

Once known only as a granite hub, Kuppam is now emerging as a local hotspot for peacock conservation. Residents say sightings have increased in recent years as the birds adapt to the mix of rock, scrub and open space.

As quarrying continues, the growing presence of peacocks is giving the border town a new identity — from stone to sanctuary.
