OpenAI launches ‘ChatGPT for Teens’ with stronger guardrails and parental controls

OpenAI on Tuesday introduced “ChatGPT for Teens,” a version of its AI chatbot tailored for minors, with enhanced security features and parental controls, as tech platforms face growing scrutiny over AI safety for children.

The $852-billion startup said the new version includes stronger guardrails designed specifically for younger users, along with tools that give parents more oversight of how teens interact with the chatbot.

The launch comes as OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging ChatGPT harmed children. It also arrives as the company prepares for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering.

Platforms across the industry have come under fierce criticism over risks associated with AI chatbots, including exposure to inappropriate content and lack of age-appropriate safeguards.

OpenAI did not detail all the specific guardrails in the teen version, but said the update is part of its broader effort to make AI safer for minors while keeping the tool accessible for education and learning.

The company said “ChatGPT for Teens” will roll out with parental control options that allow guardians to manage settings and monitor usage.
