New Begonia species described from Arunachal Pradesh
Guwahati: A new species of flowering plant has been described from Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Begonia neelamorum, found in Keyi Panyor and named after the Neelam clan of the Nyishi community, is the 54th Begonia species recorded from India’s northeastern region.
The species was described by researchers from Arunachal Pradesh. Details of the discovery were published on September 24, 2026.
Begonia is a genus of perennial flowering plants, one of the largest genera of flowering plants, known for its diverse and ornamental foliage.
Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot and is home to a rich diversity of Begonia species due to its humid, subtropical climate.
