Mixing water with diesel can cut emissions by up to 68%, study finds
Nigeria: Researchers from the Federal University of Technology Owerri say adding small amounts of water to diesel fuel could significantly reduce pollution from diesel engines.
The method, called Water-in-Diesel Emulsion or WiDE, mixes tiny water droplets into diesel using surfactants to keep the fuel stable. When burned, the water turns to vapor and creates a “micro-explosion” that helps fuel burn more completely. At the same time, it lowers combustion temperatures.
Reviewing global studies, the team found WiDE can cut nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 67% and particulate matter by up to 68%. Many tests also showed improved engine efficiency.
“Water-in-diesel emulsions are a practical and cost-effective way to make diesel engines cleaner,” said lead author Dr. Chukwuemeka Fortunatus Nnadozie. “It does not require redesigning the engine.”Researchers note more testing is needed on long-term engine effects, but say the technology could offer an immediate way to make transport and industrial diesel use cleaner.
