Migratory birds flock to ulsoor lake as redevelopment work continues
Bengaluru: The ongoing redevelopment of historic Ulsoor Lake has drawn an unexpected set of visitors — migratory birds — attracting walkers and birdwatchers to the 108-acre water body.
Over the last 15 to 20 days, nearly 30 pelicans have been camping on the lake’s island, while wetland areas around it have seen about a dozen painted storks, officials said. A senior lake engineer from the GBA said the water level has been kept shallow due to construction of pathways and other infrastructure, creating ideal conditions for the birds. “For the last 15 to 20 days, these birds have made the island in Ulsoor Lake their home,” the engineer said. “While the storks move closer to humans, the pelicans are shy and remain at a distance.”
The arrival has offered photography enthusiasts and birdwatchers a chance to spot the species in the heart of the city. Officials, however, raised concerns over people feeding pigeons and rats on the Kalyani premises. “Hope better sense prevails among them,” the engineer added.
The GBA has undertaken the Rs 100 crore development of Ulsoor Lake. Works include desilting, construction of a two-level walkway with protective bunds, installation of ornamental grills and benches, and building a bridge connecting the lake to a nearby park.
