Libex: The new coffee hybrid that could change your morning brew
While the world’s coffee drinkers favour Arabica or Robusta, a newly identified hybrid called Coffea x libex — or just Libex — could become their brew of choice in the future. The ‘X’ denotes its hybrid status, marking it as a cross developed to withstand changing climate conditions.
The world drinks roughly 17,000 tonnes of Arabica and 10,000 tonnes of Robusta beans pre-roasting every day. Together, they account for more than 99.99% of global coffee production. But both face growing challenges from rising temperatures and erratic rainfall, threatening yields and quality in major coffee-growing regions.
Libex is being studied as a potential alternative that could offer better resilience to heat and drought stress. Researchers say hybrids like Libex may play a key role in securing coffee supply as climate change makes traditional varieties more susceptible to crop losses.
If the hybrid proves viable at scale, it could reshape the future of coffee farming. For now, Arabica and Robusta remain dominant, but Libex represents one of the first serious candidates to diversify the global coffee basket beyond the two beans that have defined the industry for centuries.
