Indian grey hornbills return to Grey after 60 years

Gujarat: Indian grey hornbills have bred successfully in Gir for the fourth year in a row, marking a major conservation win.

The species had vanished from Gir between the 1950s and 1960s. Around 40 birds were reintroduced between 2021 and 2023, and scientists now say the population is becoming self-sustaining.

Hornbills need mature forests with large trees for nesting and food. Their return shows the forest ecosystem is recovering. The birds also help forests regenerate by dispersing seeds over long distances.

Conservationists credit years of habitat restoration, protection, and community involvement for the success.
