Indian defence start-up D-Propulse tests rotating detonation engine at DRDO facility
Hyderabad: India-based defence start-up D-Propulse has successfully demonstrated a Rotating Detonation Engine, or RDE, at a Defence Research & Development Organisation facility in Hyderabad, the company announced recently.
An RDE is a next-generation engine design that promises to use fuel more efficiently than conventional rocket engines. The technology works by sustaining a continuous detonation wave that spins around a circular combustion chamber, extracting more energy from the same amount of fuel.
For space and defence applications, the efficiency gain matters. Launching satellites and delivering warheads over long distances are fuel-intensive and expensive. An engine that burns fuel more efficiently would need less propellant for the same mission, freeing up weight for additional payload — whether a satellite or a warhead — and improving mission profitability.“At least on paper,” the potential saving is significant for both commercial space launches and missile systems.
D-Propulse said the Hyderabad demonstration validates key aspects of its RDE design, marking a step toward developing engines that could make Indian rockets and missiles lighter, cheaper, and more capable. The company has not disclosed further details on thrust, duration, or next-phase trials.
