From cleaning floors at dawn to shaping India’s education policy: Journey of Rakesh Chitkela

At just 11 years old, while most children were still asleep, Rakesh Chitkela would wake up at 4 a.m. to help his mother clean floors in homes across Sangareddy. Today, he stands at the heart of India’s education system, contributing to policy decisions at the Ministry of Education.

Raised single-handedly by his mother, Satyamma, who worked as an ayah, Rakesh’s childhood was defined by hardship and determination. Despite the physical toll of early-morning labor, he remained committed to his studies, often heading straight from work to school.

His perseverance paid off. Rakesh scored an impressive 9.2 GPA in his academics, a milestone that opened doors to higher education opportunities. He later secured a scholarship from the University Grants Commission (UGC), easing the financial burden and allowing him to focus on his ambitions.

Today, Rakesh serves as a Young Professional with the Ministry of Education, where he contributes to shaping policies aimed at improving access and quality in India’s education sector. His work not only reflects his personal journey but also brings a grounded perspective to policymaking—one shaped by lived experience.

Beyond policy work, Rakesh actively mentors students from underprivileged backgrounds, guiding them through academic challenges and encouraging them to pursue their goals despite adversity.

His story is a powerful reminder that resilience, when paired with opportunity, can transform lives—and, in Rakesh’s case, influence the future of education in India.
