Ferrari unveils first fully electric car ‘Luce’ with 310 kmph top speed

Italian luxury carmaker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric model, the Luce, belatedly joining rivals like Porsche and Lamborghini to offer clean-energy driving thrills.

The four-door Luce — Italian for “light” — is Ferrari’s first five-seater and was developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his collective LoveFrom. The company said it aims to appeal to “families with deep pockets,” offering comfortable seats, high-end tech and a 600-liter trunk.

On performance, the Luce has a top speed of over 310 kilometres per hour (190 mph) and a range of over 530 kilometres, according to Ferrari. It uses four electric motors — one per wheel — that deliver more than 1,000 horsepower, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds. The car amplifies natural vibration sounds from its EV powertrain to maintain the “visceral appeal” of a traditional Ferrari.

Priced at €550,000 ($640,000), deliveries of the Luce are due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. CEO Benedetto Vigna said the car is “the result of five years of work”. The model was presented to more than 200 reporters in Rome at Vela di Calatrava.

The launch marks a high-stakes shift for Ferrari as competitors including Porsche and Lamborghini scale back their EV ambitions, citing weak demand. Ferrari is betting that a generation “steeped in technology and AI, and less attached to its trademark 12- and 8-cylinder engine legacy” will shift to high-tech luxury EVs, and that the move will help it expand in markets such as China where EVs are widespread and big petrol cars are heavily taxed.
