New Delhi: The Centre is considering removing restrictions on cross-ownership between airlines and airport operators, a move that could allow airline groups to pick up stakes in airports and vice versa, sources familiar with the matter said.
Current rules cap airline ownership in airports and are also understood to restrict airport operators from owning airlines.
According to people aware of the discussions, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is preparing a concept note for consultations with NITI Aayog and other government ministries on the proposed changes.
If cleared, the proposal would pave the way for airline groups such as Tata Group-owned Air India to acquire stakes in airports.
Officials said the concept note will be circulated for inter-ministerial views before it goes for final approval from the Union Cabinet.
