Centre eyes manufacturing capacity boost after industry talks

New Delhi: The government held an inter-ministerial meeting with industry associations on Friday to discuss ways to boost the country’s manufacturing sector, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.

Speaking after the meeting, Goyal said the government is committed to working closely with industry to expand manufacturing capacities, enhance quality standards, and strengthen competitiveness. The discussions focused on policy support, ease of doing business, and measures to scale up domestic production across key sectors.

Industry representatives flagged supply chain challenges, regulatory bottlenecks, and the need for infrastructure upgrades. “We want Indian manufacturing to be globally competitive, not just in cost but in quality,” Goyal told reporters. “The government will act as a facilitator and partner in that journey.”

Officials from multiple ministries, including finance, heavy industries, and MSME, attended the meeting alongside chambers and sectoral associations. The push comes as India looks to position itself as a global manufacturing hub amid shifting supply chains and rising demand for high-value production. Further consultations with industry are expected in the coming weeks.
