British startup develops bacteria-powered battery for “unending” trickle of electricity

London: A British startup Bactery claims to have developed a battery that generates electricity using bacteria, offering a maintenance-free power source that works day and night.

Bactery says its battery uses nature’s microbes to generate an unending trickle of power. By stringing the prototypes together, the company says they can produce a stream of electricity.

Bactery founder and CEO Jakub Dziegielowski told Reuters News the device is designed to complement standard renewable systems like solar. He said it can draw power even when the sun is not shining. “In the labs we have six-times more powerful systems,” Dziegielowski said in a video about how it works. He added that “The end goal is to get to 4 watts per cubic meter.”

The device is designed to be maintenance-free and have a 30-year lifespan. According to Dziegielowski, the batteries can be scaled up and installed fully underground. “You can scale the devices bigger and have them installed fully underground,” he said. “Then you take an averaged size garden and all of a sudden you can offset most of your household electricity bills with your garden—all year round.”
