A birthday party for 14 Labradors: How one crazy night created an extended family

Wales: A litter of 12 unexpected puppies was reunited with their golden mom and dad to celebrate their first birthday as a family, complete with party hats and dog-friendly cake.

The reunion comes a year after a dramatic night in August 2025, when Rhian Boxall from Wales was babysitting her brother Meirion’s pregnant yellow Labrador, Tilly, while he was away on holiday.

Veterinarians had assured them Tilly would have six or seven puppies and was unlikely to go into labour while her owner was travelling.

But over the course of 15 hours, Rhian, her husband Steve and their two children helped deliver 12 puppies.”Looking back at that night, it was a complete rollercoaster of emotions — and pure panic,” Rhian told SWNS. “We completely lost count of how many puppies were arriving.”

Rhian couldn’t bear to let the smallest female go, so she adopted her, while Meirion adopted one of the boys. Most of the litter stayed in Wales with close family and friends, while two went to England.

The owners set up a WhatsApp group to support each other through the puppy stages.”It has turned into a real extended family. Our house is constantly full of dogs now, as we pet-sit for the other owners — it’s like running a dog hotel,” Meirion said.

One year later, proud parents Tilly and Lolo were reunited with all 12 pups under one roof.”Having all 12 pups back under one roof with Tilly and Lolo was beautifully chaotic, but it just shows how much love has come out of that one crazy night,” Rhian said.”Seeing the whole pack back together, healthy, happy, and turning one, is just wonderful,” Meirion added.

This summer, Rhian’s dog stayed with Meirion for holidays, while Tilly and Lolo returned to the scene of last summer’s birth — with zero surprise deliveries this time.
