Heat pumps are quickly becoming the default for US homes. 46% of all new homes built last year installed heat pumps, just 1% behind gas furnaces and ACs combined, according to the Building Decarbonization Coalition.
In Q1 2026, heat pump sales were 32% higher than older heating systems. Sales have doubled in the last 15 years.
The devices heat and cool using electricity, cutting emissions vs gas furnaces and tapping into renewables. New EPA rules have also replaced old refrigerants with lower-impact alternatives.
Builders also like them because pairing heat pumps with electric appliances means no gas lines, lowering costs.
“All the trends are pointing towards increased heat pump adoption,” said Kevin Carbonnier of the coalition.
