Skyroot’s Vikram-1 reaches orbit in India’s first private orbital launch
Sriharikota: India entered a new era in space on Saturday as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket.
The small-satellite launch vehicle lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 12:05 p.m. IST and reached low-earth orbit. The mission, named ‘Aagaman’, Hindi for ‘arrival’, marks the first time an Indian orbital launch was led by a private company rather than ISRO.
Until now, all of India’s orbital rockets had been state-funded and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation. Since 2020, the government has opened the domestic space sector to private players through bodies like IN-SPACe, allowing firms to build launch vehicles and use ISRO infrastructure.
Globally, only a handful of private companies have achieved orbital launches, including SpaceX, Rocket Lab, Firefly Aerospace, and several Chinese firms. Others like ABL Space Systems and Isar Aerospace are still working toward their first success.
But Skyroot executives and analysts say one launch won’t guarantee business success. The global small-satellite launch market is rapidly evolving, and the company still faces major challenges including domestic demand, commercial contracts, and market uncertainties.
Vikram-1’s success proves India’s private space sector can reach orbit. The next climb will be turning that technical milestone into a sustainable business.
