India’s first bullet train set for August 2027 launch on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route

New Delhi: India’s first high-speed “bullet” train will begin phased operations from August 15, 2027 on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.

Built with Japanese technology, the 300-mile line will connect Mumbai, Surat and Ahmedabad, and cut travel time by more than 4 hours. The first section between Surat and Vapi is set to open first.

The trains will be Shinkansen models capable of 164 mph, with earthquake-resistant design and a strong safety record.

The project, funded with Japanese expertise and loans, includes India’s first undersea tunnel and has faced 4 years of delays due to land acquisition issues.

Officials say if the rollout succeeds, future high-speed lines to Pune and Chennai are planned for the 2030s.
