Gaganyaan: How India’s maiden crewed mission will carry astronauts to space and back

New Delhi: India’s first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, is designed to send Indian astronauts to space and bring them back safely to Earth.

For the mission, ISRO will use the Human-rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (HLVM3). The rocket will inject the mission’s Orbital Module (OM) into the desired orbit, where the Gaganyaan astronauts will be onboard.

The Orbital Module consists of two sections — the Crew Module and the Service Module — connected by a joint.

The Crew Module will serve as the habitat for the astronauts during the flight.

The Service Module will provide on-orbit support to the Orbital Module, including power and propulsion functions.

Gaganyaan marks a major milestone in India’s space program, as the country prepares for its maiden crewed space mission.
