Norway firm to set up India’s first river kinetic energy demo plant in Arunachal Pradesh

Guwahati: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with Norway-based Tidal Sails AS to establish India’s first river kinetic energy demonstration plant.

The project aims to generate electricity directly from river currents without requiring major civil infrastructure such as large dams.

Announcing the pact, Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul said the technology could help ensure the environmentally responsible utilisation of natural resources while expanding clean energy options in the state.

Kinetic energy systems harness the natural flow of rivers to produce power, making them a low-impact alternative for regions with strong river currents like Arunachal Pradesh.

Officials said the demonstration plant will test the feasibility and performance of the technology in Indian river conditions. If successful, it could pave the way for wider deployment across the Northeast and other riverine states.

The MoU was signed in the presence of state government representatives and officials from Tidal Sails AS.
