India’s rooftop solar push: 2-kW systems power homes for rs 30,000 per kW as capacity hits 23 GW

New Delhi: Backed by global initiatives from UNESCO and UNFCCC, countries are scaling up ‘green’ solutions to cut carbon dioxide, with solar panels emerging as a key success story.

In India, the shift is visible on rooftops across the country. Under the ‘Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, a grid-connected home solar installation now costs about Rs 30,000 per kW after subsidies. A 2-kW system is enough to cover the basic electricity needs of a typical household.

The adoption has been massive. Crores of such panels are already in use, pushing India’s rooftop solar capacity to 23 gigawatt (GW).

The scheme has made solar affordable for middle-class households, turning sunlight into direct savings on power bills while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With installations spreading from cities to small towns, rooftop solar is becoming a cornerstone of India’s clean energy transition.
