Karnataka launches state-wide program to track antimicrobial resistance

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Health Department has launched a state-wide scientific surveillance programme to map and monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns across all districts.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, Bengaluru. It aims to generate evidence that can guide public health interventions, antibiotic stewardship, and policy decisions.

Officials said the programme will identify resistance trends, emerging microbial threats, and geographical variations in antimicrobial resistance across the state.

The initiative involves systematic sample collection and analysis at selected surveillance sites. Data from these sites will help health authorities track how bacteria are evolving and which antibiotics are losing effectiveness.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global health concern, making common infections harder to treat. The state’s surveillance effort is designed to give policymakers and clinicians real-time data to improve treatment protocols and curb misuse of antibiotics.
