Malaria vaccine, ‘magnetic surfboard’ for freight among European inventor award finalists

A malaria vaccine, a “magnetic surfboard” for rail freight, and a cancer-targeting antibody are among 12 innovations shortlisted for this year’s European Inventor Award.

The prize recognizes inventors tackling some of the world’s most critical challenges. Finalists were announced this week, with the winner set to be revealed on July 2.

Among those shortlisted is Portuguese oncologist Paula Videira. Her team developed an antibody that targets unique signatures found exclusively on the surface of cancer cells, an advance that could lead to more precise, targeted therapies.

Irish-British vaccinologist Sir Adrian Hill also made the list for leading development of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine. The jab has shown markedly higher protection than other malaria vaccines in trials.

Poland’s Przemek Ben Paczek is shortlisted for a levitation system that can be retrofitted to existing railways. Dubbed a “magnetic surfboard,” the technology moves freight without locomotives or fossil fuels.

Award organizers said the 12 finalists “highlight how science, engineering and entrepreneurship can contribute to more sustainable societies, stronger healthcare systems and a more resilient economy.”
