Rome: India and Italy formally elevated their bilateral relationship to a “Special Strategic Partnership” during talks in Rome on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the Italian Prime Minister, where the two leaders held discussions and announced the upgrade.
The move signals deeper cooperation between New Delhi and Rome across key sectors. While officials did not release a joint statement immediately, the partnership is expected to expand collaboration in defense, trade, technology, energy, and cultural exchanges.
India and Italy have strengthened ties in recent years, with increased ministerial visits and growing trade volumes. The new designation places Italy among a select group of countries with which India has a “special” or “strategic” partnership framework.
Photographs from the meeting showed Modi and Meloni shaking hands in front of the official seal of the Italian government. The meeting was part of Prime Minister Modi’s ongoing engagements in Europe. Further details on specific agreements signed during the visit are awaited.
