Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the removal of the 11% import duty on cotton, citing the need to ensure raw material availability for the textile industry.
In his letter sent Thursday, Mr. Vijay said the move would help the sector “remain globally competitive, enhance exports as well as protect jobs.”
Tamil Nadu is a major hub for India’s textile and apparel manufacturing, with the industry employing millions across spinning, weaving, and garment units. Industry bodies have repeatedly flagged high input costs and supply constraints as key challenges, especially amid volatile global cotton prices.
The appeal comes as exporters look to maintain momentum after merchandise exports grew nearly 14% in April. A decision on the duty would rest with the Centre’s finance and commerce ministries.
