Ilaiyaraaja’s breakthrough film ‘Annakili’ turns 50, remembered as rural classic
Chennai: Tamil cinema’s landmark rural drama Annakili completed 50 years on May 14, marking half a century since the 1976 film that launched composer Ilaiyaraaja and reshaped film music.
The black-and-white film, rooted in a village setting, told the story of Annam — a midwife played by Sujatha — who finds solace amid sorrow while eking out a living. Actor Sivakumar portrayed Thyagarajan, the film’s hero.
“A black-and-white film running successfully for 200 days was remarkable, and much of that achievement was due to the songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja,” Sivakumar said, recalling the film’s impact.
Annakili was a trendsetter on several fronts. It showcased the phenomenal talent of Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers, who would go on to dominate film music for decades. The film’s soundtrack became a cultural touchstone, blending folk roots with fresh orchestration.
Sivakumar also recalled an earlier milestone: the 50-day celebration of Uravu Solla Oruvan at Shanmuga Theatre on September 6, 1975. The cast included R. Muthuraman, Sujatha, Padmapriya, and Sivakumar. Poet Kannadasan, who attended the evening show, praised the film. Kannadasan was the uncle of the late producer and writer Panchu Arunachalam.
