Sister duo launches Yatri app to help Mumbai commuters track local trains in real time

Mumbai: For the city’s 8 million daily local train commuters, guessing platform changes and train arrivals is a familiar part of the rush. Now, a new app built by two Mumbai sisters aims to take the uncertainty out of the journey.

Reeva Sakaria and Lakhi Sakaria Chowdhary created the Yatri app, a live train tracking platform designed specifically for Mumbai’s Central and Western Railway divisions. As an official partner of Indian Railways, Yatri gives users access to a train’s live location and updated schedule information.

The idea, Reeva said, came from a frustration every Mumbaikar knows well. “If you’ve lived in Mumbai long enough, you’ve known there should be something like this,” she explained. “While there are apps that display train information, there wasn’t one official digital information centre for railways. That’s what we wanted to build with Yatri.

”Mumbai’s local network is known for its pace and volume. From the 6:30 pm Churchgate Fast to the early morning Andheri Slow, commuters often rely on guesswork and distant headlights to figure out if the approaching train is theirs. For many, every second counts.

Yatri is now working directly with both Central and Western Railway to provide live updates, helping passengers plan their travel, reduce wait times, and navigate last-minute platform shifts. Built “by Mumbaikars, for Mumbaikars,” the app turns a daily challenge into a simpler, more predictable ride.
