GITAM Professor studies how climate change releases pollutants from Arctic Ice
Visakhapatnam: Dr Manoj P Rayaroth, 37, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at GITAM University, Visakhapatnam, spent a month at India’s Himadri Station in Svalbard as part of Batch 4 of Indian Arctic Expedition 2026-27.
Born in Thalavil village, Kannur to daily-wage labourer parents, he is ranked among the world’s top 5% scientists by SciRank 2025 with 2,900 citations.
His project studies how glacier melt releases emerging contaminants into marine waters. “Sometimes the water flow as part of glacier melt is more, and sometimes less. Within a week, we can see the difference,” he said.
A PhD from MG University (2017) and researcher at Duke, POSTECH, Karlsruhe, Gdansk and Orleans, he joined GITAM in 2024 and leads a MoE SPARC project on microplastics with University of Montreal.
