97-year-old doctor keeps promise to watch great-granddaughter get her white coat

United States: Westel Creager, 97, made a promise to his great-granddaughter years ago. If she got into medical school, he told her he would be there when she graduated — and put on her first white coat. This summer, he kept that promise.

Haiden Hauret fulfilled her side of the bargain. She was accepted into medical school and even followed in Westel’s footsteps to his alma mater, the University of Kentucky.

Westel first attended UK 60 years ago. He began his adult life as a carpenter, but later decided to return to school to study medicine. He was the oldest student in his class. That did not stop him. He graduated and went on to work in emergency rooms well into his 70s.

According to his granddaughter Kristi Johnson, Westel spent his career serving underserved communities. “He always gave back to low economic areas that were underserved medically,” she told Newsweek. “He got his pilot’s license and flew his plane with the Good Samaritans into Mexico and treated patients. He also opened an AIDS hospital in his later years.”Over the years, none of Westel’s children or grandchildren chose medicine. Until Haiden.

As she moved through medical school, Westel remained determined to be present for her white coat ceremony. His family made sure he had a clean white doctor’s coat to wear for the occasion.In an emotional Instagram video, Westel whispered, “I’m overwhelmed.” Minutes later, he watched Haiden receive her own white coat.

For Johnson, the moment reflects lessons from both generations. “Grandpa was tired of being poor and wanted to become a well-respected doctor, so he did it,” she said. He credits staying active and curious for his longevity. “You are never too old, so keep pushing yourself, keep taking the stairs, adding new hobbies and changing your path if needed.”With Haiden now beginning her medical career, a promise made decades ago has come full circle — and a new chapter in the family’s medical story has begun.
