YouTuber Anantharaman Ajay makes directorial debut with horror short ‘Granny’

Content creator and actor Anantharaman Ajay has made his directorial debut with Granny, a 41-minute psychological horror short that is now drawing attention for its tight storytelling and strong performances.

The film stars veteran theatre artiste KPAC Leela and Siva Raaj. It follows Rony, a caregiver sent by an employment agency to look after Granny, played by Leela, in a remote village. The premise hinges on a mystery — previous caretakers have left the job soon after arriving, and as Rony settles in, he begins to unravel what’s really happening inside the house.

According to those involved in the project, Granny delivers the key ingredients of effective psychological horror: an intriguing plot, assured editing and music, and committed performances from its lead cast.

For Ajay, the short marks a shift from digital content to filmmaking. Known for his work as a YouTuber and actor, he now steps behind the camera to helm a project that blends suspense with character-driven drama.

In Granny, Leela plays the enigmatic elder at the center of the story, while Raaj appears alongside her in a role that drives the unfolding mystery.

The debut highlights a growing trend of digital creators moving into independent filmmaking, bringing their audience-first sensibility to short-format cinema.

Granny is being positioned as Ajay’s first step into direction, with the filmmaker balancing his ongoing work in YouTube and acting alongside this new venture into film.
