Villagers’ conservation efforts make Venkatraopeta Cheruvu a haven for migratory birds

In a remarkable display of community-led conservation, the residents of Venkatraopeta village in Mancherial district have been safeguarding the local wetland, making it a preferred habitat for migratory birds, including the majestic painted storks. For generations, the villagers have protected these winged visitors from predators and outsiders, ensuring their annual return.

The Venkatraopeta cheruvu has become a hotspot for migratory birds, attracting species from Siberia and Europe with its lush vegetation and abundant food sources. The villagers’ efforts have created a safe haven, making it an ideal breeding ground for the birds.

The forest department has taken notice of the villagers’ dedication and is considering declaring the lake a wetland. “The availability of vegetation and safe nesting conditions are key factors attracting the birds,” said Forest Divisional Officer K Sarveshwar.

The wetland’s unique ecosystem, featuring drought-resistant flora and local fish species, supports the birds’ needs. The villagers’ resolution to protect their cheruvu is a testament to their commitment to conservation.
