‘The Whole Story’ showcases Dalit art and resistance at Lalit Kala Akademi

A powerful celebration of Dalit identity and creativity is underway at Lalit Kala Akademi, where the exhibition The Whole Story is marking Dalit History Month with art that speaks, questions, and resists. Organised by Neelam Cultural Centre as part of the Vaanam Art Festival, the show brings together 36 artists from the Neelam Arts Collective, presenting a diverse range of installations, paintings, and animation works rooted in anti-caste thought and self-expression.

Drawing inspiration from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s words, “Freedom of mind is the real freedom,” the exhibition transforms the gallery into a space of dialogue and reflection. Each work stands as an act of quiet revolution, exploring themes of resilience, dignity, and lived experience. Among the featured pieces is Water and Caste by Shrujana N Shridhar, which examines the deep social histories tied to access and exclusion.

Curated to amplify voices that have long been at the margins, The Whole Story moves beyond representation to assertion. It invites viewers to engage with narratives of resistance that are personal yet collective, artistic yet political. For the artists, the canvas becomes a site of reclaiming space, telling stories on their own terms, and envisioning a future shaped by equality.

The exhibition runs at Lalit Kala Akademi over the next few days, offering visitors a chance to witness how art becomes a medium of liberation and a testament to an enduring spirit of freedom.
