‘The Uprising’ movie review: Great battle scenes, great acting, strange ending

Paul Greengrass’ gripping historical reimagining ‘The Uprising’ is thrilling till its Robin Hood-shaped epilogue, critics say.

Written and directed by Greengrass, the retelling of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 moves quickly, echoing present-day concerns of inequality and the wasteful lives of the rich.

The film stars Andrew Garfield and Jamie Bell, who shine with striking work by an excellent ensemble and tightly staged battle sequences.

Greengrass’s trademark style of handheld camera work and sweeping drone shots drags viewers into the mud, grime and betrayals as the story unfolds.

The film remains gripping until the strange epilogue, which critics say fumbles by shoehorning Robin Hood into the story.
