‘The Death Of Robin Hood’ review: Hugh Jackman leads a grim
Mumbai: Director Michael Sarnoski has delivered a radically dark version of the Sherwood Forest outlaw in The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman.
Known for the award-winning Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, Sarnoski strips away the romance and heroism usually tied to Robin Hood. Critics describe the film as “unrelentingly grim and gory,” with nothing merry about this revisionist take on history’s most famous outlaw.
The new film stands in stark contrast to earlier versions — from Taron Egerton’s action-heavy Robin Hood and Ridley Scott’s epic with Russell Crowe, to Kevin Costner’s classic and even Mel Brooks’ comedy Men in Tights. Instead of crusades, loyal Merry Men, and ballads, Sarnoski’s version presents a brutal, stripped-down legend anchored by Jackman’s performance.
