Springburn Winter Gardens to rise from the ashes
After 40 years of dereliction, Glasgow’s Springburn Winter Gardens is set to be revived. The historic greenhouse, built in 1892, is Scotland’s largest and was once a hub for classical concerts and exotic flower displays. The Springburn Winter Garden Trust has received £1.1 million from the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund to restore the building and transform it into a community arts and culture hub.
The trust plans to stabilize the structure, install lighting and pathways, and create a “living ruin” that will host events, exhibitions, and performances. The project aims to reintegrate the Winter Gardens into Springburn Park and provide a vibrant space for the community.
Locals are thrilled about the restoration, with many fond memories of the greenhouse. “People are really willing this on and it really captures your imagination,” said Sarah Robinson Frood, who worked on the restoration plans.
