Snake conservation project earns global recognition at Nat Geo Slingshot Challenge
A youth-led conservation initiative from Andhra Pradesh has received global recognition at the 2026 Slingshot Challenge organised by the National Geographic Society and Videos for Change.
‘Learning to Coexist with Snakes’, developed under the project Snake Speek by wildlife enthusiast Sampath Kantimahanti, received an honourable mention. The project was selected among 50 entries globally from over 2,300 submissions across 104 countries.
The recognition has brought renewed attention to Snake Speek’s ongoing work in rural Andhra Pradesh. The project focuses on reducing fear, myths and human-snake conflict through awareness programmes, rescue support, and educational outreach.
By combining community engagement with science-based messaging, the initiative aims to promote coexistence with snakes and improve safety for both people and reptiles.
The Slingshot Challenge by National Geographic Society and Videos for Change spotlights youth-led storytelling and conservation projects worldwide. This year’s competition drew thousands of entries, with Andhra’s Snake Speek standing out for its grassroots impact.
