Siemens’ 9,000-HP D9 locomotives hit the tracks in first delivery to Indian Railways

New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken delivery of its first batch of D9 electric freight locomotives from Siemens, launching a decade-long fleet overhaul.

The 9,000-horsepower locomotives are part of a 2023 order for 1,200 units to be supplied over 11 years. They will be manufactured at Siemens’ factory in Dahod, Gujarat, and maintained at four depots across India.

Designed for heavy-haul operations, the D9 locomotives can haul up to 4,500 tonnes at speeds of 120 kmph. Each unit is equipped with regenerative braking and advanced safety systems. The locomotives support Indian Railways’ goals of increasing freight capacity and cutting carbon emissions. Railways aims to raise its freight share to 45% by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

“This delivery advances our partnership with Indian Railways to build a modern, efficient, and sustainable freight ecosystem,” a Siemens spokesperson said.
