School community comes together to support deaf student

A heartwarming story from Campton, New Hampshire, has touched hearts worldwide. Seven-year-old Ben O’Reilly, a first-grader at Campton Elementary, is deaf and has additional special needs. Until recently, Ben struggled to connect with his peers and teachers, feeling isolated and alone.

The turning point came when a few classmates, including Reid Spring, started learning simple signs to interact with Ben. This small gesture sparked a wave of kindness, with the entire class joining in to learn sign language. The effort soon spread throughout the school, with teachers and staff members also learning sign language.

“Ben’s story is a testament to the power of kindness and inclusion,” said Etta O’Reilly, Ben’s adoptive mother. “It’s incredible to see the school community come together to support him”.Today, nearly every student and staff member at Campton Elementary knows at least some sign language, creating an environment where Ben feels seen, included, and understood.
