Rising autism numbers tied to awareness, diagnosis, not screens: Experts

New Delhi: Autism spectrum disorder is drawing more attention on social media, with posts often linking excessive screen time to autism in children. But neurologists and developmental experts say the science behind autism is far more complex.

According to the World Health Organization, about one in 100 children globally is estimated to be living with autism. Experts note that the reported rise in prevalence is likely due to a mix of factors, not one single cause.

Increased awareness and better diagnosis mean more children are being identified today than in past decades. Research also points to strong genetic influences, along with environmental factors that may play a role in how autism develops.

Medical professionals caution against drawing direct links between screen time and autism. While limiting screens can be part of healthy childhood development, there is no evidence that it causes autism spectrum disorder.

Experts recommend parents concerned about development consult pediatricians or specialists for proper evaluation rather than rely on social media claims.
